WICHITA – With snow pounding the Oklahoma panhandle, the Newman softball team’s final games of the regular season have been canceled, locking up a postseason berth for the Jets.

Newman (17-33, 10-9 Heartland) earned the fifth and final spot in the 2017 Heartland Conference Softball Championship over St. Edward’s by winning percentage. The Jets won eight of their final 12 games of the regular season to post their best conference finish in the program’s Division II era.

The tournament is hosted by top seed and regular season champ St. Mary’s, against whom the Jets got their hot streak started, taking two out of three against the Rattlers in San Antonio April 7-8.

Newman will play in the first game of the tournament, going up against fourth-seeded Texas A&M International at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The Jets will play a second game Thursday whether they win or lose.
