TOPEKA — Washburn pole vaulter Virgi Scardanzan has added to her outstanding 2020-21 school year by adding first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America® track and field/cross country honors. Scardanzan becomes the first Ichabod track and field member to be named to the Academic All-America squad and the 37th Washburn athlete overall to be honored.
After being selected as a finalist for the MIAA’s 2021 Spring Student-Athlete of the Year award, Scardanzan would go on to finish second earning a silver medal at the Italian National Championships on the international stage in July.
This past year, Scardanzan earned All-American honors in both the indoor and the outdoor seasons by finishing a Washburn-best second place in both events. She was also named the USTFCCCA Central Region Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. She won the MIAA Outdoor Championship at 4.25m (13-11.25) and won the Loper Twilight Qualifier with a vault of 4.35m (14-03.25), a mark that was the No. 5 mark in NCAA DII history and eighth all-time in her native Italy’s history. She went over the 4.00m five times during the outdoor season winning six meets during the season. She finished third in the Indoor MIAA Championships earning all-MIAA honors. She was a member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and the MIAA Scholar Athlete for both indoor and outdoor and was also named the Washburn Senior Student Athlete of the Year.
