CONCORDIA— The Cloud County Community College baseball program has set its sights on consistently competing for Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) titles. And the T-Birds believe they got a little closer to that goal on Tuesday when the Cloud County Community College Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Brett Becker as an Assistant Coach.
Becker, who has spent three seasons inside the KJCCC at Colby Community College (2014-2016), will assume the role of hitting coach and infield instructor for the T-Birds. He bringa a proven track record to the table after successful coaching stints at NJCAA and NCAA Division II institutions across Kansas.
“Brett brings a passion for coaching and coaching experience at every level. His passion makes him a guy that kids want to play for,” said Cloud County head coach, Eric Gilliland. “He was a big part of Colby’s staff for their league championship in 2016 and he knows what it takes. We can’t wait to get him here and go to work in 2018-19.”
Becker served as an assistant coach/offensive coordinator at Colby from 2014-2017. Prior to that, he spent a season as an assistant at his alma mater Fort Hays State University in 2012-13, helping the Tigers to the fourth best team batting average (.341) at the NCAA Division II level.
In 2011-2012, Becker was an assistant at Emporia State University and helped oversee a Hornets defense that posted a fielding percentage of .974.
His body of work, which also includes seven summers as Associate Head Coach with the Topeka Golden Giants (2009-2015), earned Becker an opportunity in the summer of 2017 to begin coaching in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League.
Becker currently serves as the hitting and third base coach for the Falmouth Commodores, the defending Western Division champions. Falmouth led the Cape Cod League in doubles, home runs and runs scored in 2017 under Becker’s guidance and had 18 players selected in the 2018 MLB Draft.
As a player, Becker was a member of Cowley College’s 2006 KJCCC East championship team before continuing his playing career alongside Gilliland at Fort Hays State University from 2007-09. He was voted First-Team All-MIAA and Second-Team Daktronics All-Region as a utility player in 2008. His six triples in 2008 is tied for the second most all-time for a single season at FHSU.
Becker will join the Cloud County coaching staff on campus at the conclusion of the Cape Cod Baseball League season in mid-August.
