DALLAS – Closing strong during the final session, the Newman men’s and women’s bowling teams both finished in third place at the sectional qualifier to earn bids to the Intercollegiate Team Championships next month.
The Jet women were consistent throughout the weekend, maintaining their spot in third place at the end of each session. Through 48 baker games, they led fourth-place Midland by 54 pins and were 143 pins clear of fifth.
They stretched that lead early in the afternoon, averaging 202 over the first five games to stay comfortably in the top four and earn their second straight bid to the national tournament.
The Jet men slid to fifth place after a tough morning on Sunday, falling right in the middle of a group of five teams separated by just 85 pins and fighting for the last two qualifying spots.
Those fortunes changed sharply over the last 16 games of the day, as the Jets averaged 212 across the final session and totally 105 more pins than the next closest team to finish comfortably in third.
Both teams move on to the ITC, which begins April 20 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
